The skin senses you before it touches you. That is the entire product. Generative Bionics has covered its Gene.01 humanoid in a sensor-dense layer that registers a person nearby and adjusts, so the machine feels a worker approaching a half-second before contact could occur. It is a real capability and, on the floor, a useful one. A robot that flinches before it hits you is better than one that hits you.
What the company has not released is the data that says how well it works, under what loads, at what failure rate, on which bodies. The capability is announced. The evidence that would let anyone sign off on it is not.
This is the order things always arrive in, and the order is the whole story. The demonstration comes first because a demonstration is cheap and legible and makes a good clip. The safety case comes last, if it comes, because writing it is slow and expensive and its only product is a sentence that says yes, this is allowed. The gap between those two events is where every worker on that floor is currently standing.
what the skin is actually for
Read the mechanism plainly. The skin does not exist to protect the worker. It exists to let the robot keep moving while the worker is near it. Before this layer, a machine that could hurt a person had to be caged, or slowed, or stopped when a human entered its reach. The sensing skin removes the stop. The robot and the person now share the same square meter of floor at speed, and the thing that permits that is a promise, made by the sensor, that it will always feel you in time.

The capability is finished and the sign-off is not, and the machine is already on the floor, feeling for the worker it was not yet proven safe to stand beside.
