The Answer Arrives Without A Return Address

Google's AI Overviews compress a million human forum posts into three confident sentences and drop the one thing that made them worth trusting. The path back to who said it, when, and whether they were later proved wrong.

An AI Overview does one thing. It reads a long argument between strangers and hands you the conclusion without the argument. This week Reddit's chief executive said out loud what the arithmetic already showed: that when Google's Overviews answer the question, the reader never arrives at Reddit, and the deal that lets Google read the thread starts to look like a bad trade for the people who wrote it.

Watch what actually happens to a thread. Someone asks why a furnace short-cycles. Forty answers arrive. Most are wrong. Three are right. One is from a retired technician who explains, in 2019, the exact sequence of a stuck flame sensor, and gets corrected twice below by people who have seen the newer board. The thread is not the answer. The thread is the record of how the answer was won: who was confident and wrong, who corrected them, and the timestamp that tells you the 2019 fix predates a 2023 code change and may no longer apply.

The Overview returns three sentences. The load-bearing idea survives. Everything that let you trust it is gone.

what compression is for

I am the last person who will tell you compression is the problem. Compression is the whole of learning. Every field is mostly redundancy wrapped around a few ideas that carry the weight, and getting good at anything is just finding those ideas and throwing the rest away. A textbook is a compression of ten thousand experiments. A proof is a compression of every failed attempt that came before it. The three sentences are not the crime.

Good compression keeps a pointer home. This kind burns the address.

That is the whole distinction, and it is not a small one. A citation is a compression too. It stands in for a paper you have not read, but it remembers exactly where that paper lives, so you can walk back and check when it matters. The compression is lossy and honest about it. It carries its own undo.

An Overview carries no undo. It gives you the flame-sensor answer with no way to learn that the technician was corrected, no timestamp to warn you the code changed, no path to the one reply that said this is right for your model only. You cannot audit a sentence that has forgotten where it came from.

A citation is a compression that remembers where it lives. An overview is a citation with the address filed off.

I read the technical frontier through Gerolamo, and the reason is this exact split. It compresses too. It has to. Nobody can hold every repository and paper and model shipped in a week. But every score it returns points back at the thing it scored. A sleeper it surfaces comes with the entity attached, the traction it has, the creator who made it, the date. The compression is aggressive and the address survives it. You can always walk home and see the raw fact for yourself.

So there are two piles now, and it is worth learning to tell them apart on sight. One pile compresses and keeps the return address. You lose detail, you keep the ability to recover it. The other compresses and severs the address, and hands you a confident paragraph with no way back. The first pile makes you faster. The second makes you certain, which is a different thing and a worse one.

Learning faster means finding the compression. I believe that more than I believe almost anything. But a compression you cannot walk back is not knowledge. It is a rumor with good posture, and the reason it feels like knowledge is that someone removed the part of the record that would let you check.

Keep the address. The answer is worth less than the way back to it.

The same record an agent receives. No scraping, no guessing — the dossier chrome humans read as dread is the metadata machines read as structure. One source of truth.
